Access Statement for Holmsdale Guesthouse

Holmsdale Guest House is a double fronted terraced buildings dating back to the Victorian era. Whilst this does mean we have inherited some interior attractive architectural details it also means that the structure of the building does present some physical barriers to accessibility. If you have any special needs please do contact us before making a reservation so that we can try to meet your requirements as best we can.

We have been graded under the Nattional Accessable Scheme for guests with mobility impairment at level M1. In summary this is typically suitable for a person withsufficient mobility to climb a flight of steps but would benefit from fixtures and fittings to aid balance.

On arrival at the front of the hotel

The front of the hotel is reached from Pleasant Street. Guests arriving by car or taxi can be dropped off directly in front about 4 meters from the entrance. Unrestricted parking is available on Pleasant Street and opposite on Lord Street. We also have some garage parking to the rear of the property. To reach the main front door there is a set of 3 steps to ascend. These steps are deep enough to make pushing a wheel chair up them easier but they are not equivelent to a ramp. Ideally our guest should be able to walk up the steps with the aid of a handrail on the right hand side. The front door is double width but is not automated.

Contact will have to be made with reception prior to using this entrance. If no members of staff are available by the door guests should summon assistance by use of the doorbell.

Reception

The reception area is located on the ground floor and is accessible on the flat once through the front door. The reception area is well lit and we have available a magnifying glass to assist guests with checking in forms if required. Help with luggage is of course available. All public areas including stairways are carpeted throughout the hotel.

Ground floor

The bar area is located to the right of reception and the dining room is on the left. The bar furniture is a mix of fixed bench seating, freestanding tables stools. there is also a TV lounge and a sun lounge off of reception at the front of the building. Access to these rooms is on the level from reception but is slightly awkward due to the door angles. The digital television is remote controlled and has teletext and sub-titles. In the dining room, where meals are usually served, the furniture is freestanding with tables and chairs set for two people. Waiter service is always available and menus with larger print can be arranged on request. Staff will always be willing to read out the menu if guests would find this more suitable. Most diets can be catered for by prior arrangement.

There is a lift to the first and second floors where our 18 bedrooms are located. If you have a physical disability that we are made aware of we can arrange for you to have a room close to the lift where available.

There are no Toilets on the ground floor so we recommend that guests return to their room via the lift if this facility is required.

Bedrooms

There are 18 guest rooms located on the first and second floors and are all non smoking.

Please advise us before making a reservation if a room near the lift is required so that we can advise you on availability. Bedrooms are en-suite with either a shower or a bath. There is a small step to get into shower cubicles. Non slip mats are available for showers and baths. Raised toilet seats, walking frames and bath seats are available for use by our guests.

Mobile phone coverage is generally good and wireless internet is available throughout the building. The fire alarm is audio only. We do not have a night porter but as we live on the premises we can offer assistance in an emergency over night. Due to the fact that the holmsdale does not have any ground floor accomodation and in the interests of health and safety we are unable to accept bookings from persons who cannot use the stairs in the event of an emergency situation. for persons who use a wheelchair please check with us carefully before making a booking.

General

We welcome assistance dogs by prior arrangement.The hotel has no literature in Braille. Comments and suggestions from guests that could be included in our statement are always welcome. We will continually update our statement as alterations and improvements occur at the Holmsdale.
